About BS7671 17th Edition Exam
BS7671:Requirements for Electrical Installations (17th Edition Wiring Regulations) was launched in 2008 as a replacement to the previous release, the 16th Edition. There have been a lot of fundamental and core changes, notable ones being the addition of RCD protection for most circuits, new definitions, an increase in special locations and some changes to bathroom zones and socket outlet requirements. Supplementary bonding has been replaced by the prevalence of 30mA RCDs, there are new definitions including a previous ignored definition of competent person and direct and indirect contact have been placed with basic contact and fault contact respectively.
The exam is very similar to the previous exam, one of the main differences is that it's now done online (using the GOLA format) and results can be obtained straight away in many cases (rather than the 2 months we previously had to wait). The questions are typical City and Guilds type, ambiguous, misleading and quite often oddly worded. If there is anything to be learned from the introduction of the new 2382 qualification, it is that quite often the questions do not change greatly, only the format.
This time round, there is the option of just completing an update qualification, known as the 2382-20. At Electrical Exams, we decided not to produce this software because to enrol on the course, you had to have studied relatively recently, it is only 30 questions and it is open book. It is targeted at those who merely need a refresher on what has changed, which frankly, can be found on a thousand sites spread over the internet and also within the good book itself. Remembering that the exam is open book, anybody who has studied recently enough to warrant starting on the 2382-20 does not really need this software to pass, they should do so based on the back of the qualifications they hold. Those who passed their 16th some time ago (or even 15th) will be unfamiliar with how the new GOLA exams work and the pressure this puts on people who are not necessarily computer savvy; the generation that grew up (like ourselves) with paper based exams will have a bit of a culture shock when they come to sit the new qualification. That is the main reason we created the software and more than likely, the reason we have sold more than 3000 exams in the first year of trading.
Nevertheless, the exam is something that anybody working within the industry will need. It will also suit those from the allied trades, those who work in design and estimation, the maintenance people, the building inspectors and anybody who works either routinely or sporadically with electricity and electrical installations and needs to prove that they can work to the latest edition.
